West African Inspired Music, Dance and Art Classes
For preschoolers to adults, this class is an introduction to African folk music, dance and art in the areas of The Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Ghana and Nigeria. The music, dances and art are comprised of natural imitations of the surrounding wildlife, and the daily activity of the people. These modalities are passed down from generation to generation to the children as early as the age of three when the child can comprehend.
Participants will have the opportunity to improvise freely from the learned notions of dance and music using an array of djembes, balaphones, shekeres, baskets and fans. An opportunity to process through a creative art project will be available at the end of each class.
